The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 requires people who plan to file for bankruptcy protection (with limited exception) to take a credit counseling class from a provider *approved to issue certificates evidencing completion of a credit counseling course, within 180 days before they file. They also must complete a debtor education course to have their debts discharged. These classes can't be taken at the same time.
